Butoh Yoga with Mariko: February 26th and March 5th, 2015
Everyone was a little bit nervous … what on earth is Butoh Yoga? But the room of 7 people were ready to play with Mariko, our Butoh Yoga teacher.
Things started normal enough. But the music was really quite awesome and trippy. After a few sun salutations, we stood.
Yes, we stood… while imagining a line of energy extending from the universe through us to the center of the earth. And then we had to imagine a horizontal energy that extended from the far left infinity to the far right infinity. So, just like in the Chinese character for King, two lines at the top and bottom and pretty much a cross in the middle. And, if the Christ reference wasn’t obvious enough, we had to imagine walking on a lake without disturbing the water, and walk backwards without disturbing the water too. All this with really trippy music.
It was the strangest and weirdest yoga class I have ever attended. It was also the most meditative. Anyone watching from the outside would think we weren’t doing very much at all, but the energy felt amazing inside – I felt like I was on LSD or something – not that I was ever on LSD. And it felt delicious and luxurious for my spirit. As I walked on that lake, it occurred to me that as adults, we don’t play imagination very much. My little daughter is in a space-shuttle one moment, falling into quick sand the next moment, and a talking pony the next. The Butoh class was an hour of living in my imagination!
Verdict: the strangest yoga class ever, but I felt completely aligned, and I can’t wait to do it again this Thursday!
